What is the meaning of Egg freezing?
The process by which the number of eggs also known as the oocytes are harvested from the body of the women and are frozen (cryopreserved) with the intention of using it in the future is called egg freezing. This procedure is mainly used by women who are not yet prepared to have children, busy in their career or education, are required to undergo the treatment procedure like chemotherapy or radiation therapy to extend their reproduction period.
What is the procedure of Egg freezing for extending fertility?
The whole procedure of egg freezing can be divided into three main steps including the ovulation induction, egg retrieval and finally the freezing. Below we have discussed all of these three steps in a comprehensive manner.
Ovulation Induction- At the beginning of treatment procedure the women will be given the synthetic hormones at the beginning of the menstrual cycle to stimulate the ovaries to produce number of eggs rather than a single egg that is developed every month. At this step the medications could be given for the ovarian stimulation along with the medications to prevent premature ovulation. In order to continuously monitor the development of the eggs the diagnostic procedures like the ultrasound and blood test are used. Further when the follicles are ready for the retrieval of the eggs the injection known as the human chorionic gonadotropin (Pregnyl, Ovidrel) or other medications are used to make the eggs matured. Now as the eggs are ready the next step is to retrieve them carefully from the mother’s body.
Eggs Retrieval-The whole procedure of egg harvesting is done under the sedation through the common approach of Transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. In this procedure the doctor inserts the ultrasound probe into the vagina of the lady in order find the follicles. Further, a needle attached with the suction device is guided through the vagina to the follicle. With the use of the suction device the multiple eggs in the follicles are removed carefully.
Freezing –Just after the careful removal of the eggs from the ovaries they are cooled down and brought to subzero temperature in order to put an end to all the biological activities and preserve them for future use. There are mainly two methods of freezing namely the slow freeze option and the vitrification. In the freezing procedure in India the substance called cryoprotectants can be used by the team of medical professionals in order to prevent the development of ice crystals during the freezing process.
After the procedure of egg freezing is complete the lady can resume her normal activity. However, in certain cases the lady may face the signs and symptoms like the high fever, abdominal pain, weight gain, heavy vaginal bleeding, difficulty in urinating etc. To manage all of these conditions the women must go to her medical professional.
Result of fertilization
Once the eggs are successfully frozen the women can anytime choose to use them. Whenever she will decide to use the eggs given by her they will be thawed and fertilized with the sperm in lab to be implanted in the uterus of the women. The crucial facts to be noted here is that the out of the eggs stored total 90% of them are able to survive freezing and around 75% are successfully fertilized. However, one thing that must be carefully understood here is that the pregnancy rates with frozen eggs are very less as compared to the fresh eggs.
